  • Art for Obama?

320_obama_artAt first glance, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) conference call of August 10th, 2009 sounds innocent enough because it’s supposedly been organized by Michael Skolnik, political director for Russell Simmons and someone not officially associated with any government agency. Skolnik appears to be acting independently as a concerned citizen and to have taken it upon himself to gather together a group of artists and art organizations hoping to move them towards “national service.” And how nice of the White House, the federal government and the NEA to make the time to participate in the call and aid this group of American artists motivated to help their country and community.

But this is only how things appear.

Should the National Endowment for the Arts create art that supports a political agenda?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi turned the health care debate up a notch Monday, penning a column along with her top deputy that questioned the patriotism of those disrupting town hall meetings to air their complaints.

Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer claimed such behavior is "simply un-American."

Is it un-American to question your politicians?

071609_ha_chart_0Click here to view a PDF file of the GOP's health care flow chart that Griff Jenkins broke down on the show last night (or "Candy Land" as he calls it.)

The chart shows the president and Congress at the top, with dozens of agencies and officials responsible for various slices of the health care program underneath.

The suggestion inherent in the chart is that the health care system would grind to a near-halt under the Democrats' plan.

What are your thoughts on the chart?

    • The Obama Doctrine?

350_obama_cairo2By some measures, President Obama's address to the Muslim world on Thursday bore striking similarities to the words of his predecessor, George W. Bush. But Obama's speech -- meant to bridge the divide between the United States and Muslims -- could mark the beginning of a new doctrine in U.S. foreign policy.

Speaking from the lectern in an ornate hall at Cairo University, Obama called for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestinians and noted deeply-rooted tensions between the U.S. and the Muslim world -- words all too similar to those of former U.S. presidents.

But Obama's views on building democracies abroad and the inevitability of a Palestinian state were a clear departure from Bush's -- positions that signal a new outlook on America's approach to the Middle East. Obama also made no reference to terrorists or terrorism, which has devastated several nations' efforts to modernize.

Among the most notable changes found in the "Obama Doctrine" that the president outlined in his remarks was the call for undemocratic countries to reform their regimes from within -- rather than having the U.S. "impose" a democratic form of government on foreign nations.

"I know there has been controversy about the promotion of democracy in recent years, and much of this controversy is connected to the war in Iraq," Obama said. "So let me be clear: no system of government can or should be imposed upon one nation by any other."
