  • Intern’s Perspective: Universal Nightmare: Exchanging Quality for Quantity

    320_102209_han_nightmare

In addition to addressing other possible consequences of universal health care, including the economic costs of such a system, last week’s health care special on “Hannity” addressed my most pressing concern: Does a government-run program mean that the curtains will be closing on quality care in the United States?

It seems that doctors and patients will be taking their last bows as the stars of the decision making process, and untrained, aloof government officials will be adding their names to the top of the playbill. After watching Maeve Rice’s testimony (you can watch it here), it was plain to see that quality care cannot be achieved in a system that emphasizes quantity.

While women suffering from the same ailment as Maeve died waiting for care, Maeve was saved because she was able to receive care in a timely fashion. She could choose her doctors and know that her doctors of choice would have the time to give her the attention that she needed both medically and emotionally. Moreover, Maeve was able to receive drugs that her European counterparts were denied because the government considered them too costly. Maeve is alive today because she was not the victim of rationed care. She did not have to beg the government to see her life as valuable enough to save.

After watching Maeve’s story (and having heard so many similar testimonies) I couldn’t help but wonder, what good is health care coverage if individuals are not granted access to doctors and treatments when they are most in need?

How do stories like Maeve’s impact your comfort level with the prospect of universal health care?

obama is a left wing socialist just like Jugo Chaves, venezuels and Evo morales of Bolivia with Fidel Castro their leader, hero, God. These people are distroing their countries, I live in Bolivia , a very Rich, poor country kept poor by the communist government. The president Evo Morales has an 8th. grade education. The vice president is a harvord graduate and avoud communist.( what is this? Harvard Communist production college? all of obama's zars harvard communist graduiates.

The President itself promised not to add a penny to the deficit of the country which is good idea and great for americans that doesn't have health insurance. Okay, now that he said that, this is my take: I will make him accountable or anyone who will aggree to the plan for ONE YEAR IN PRISON FOR A PENNY ADDED TO THE DEFICIT OF UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. They don't want a debate why not set a standard. ONE YEAR IN PRISON FOR EVERY PENNY ADDED TO THE DEFICIT OF THE COUNTRY. They promised, right!

I have friends in Canada and I've already heard similar stories. Maeve's simply reinforces my resolve to send more letters and faxes to the Blue Dogs and Olympia Snowe. How can congress even consider doing such a thing here? I've survived breast cancer for 3 years now and I thank God I had it then and hope it doesn't come back if we get Obama-care.

Hannity "the manetee" is now suggesting that Americans should not take the HN1 flu shot (he must think it's some kind of Obama conspiracy). This is one of the most irresponsible statements he has ever made. No one cares if he gets sick, (he will be off the air for a while) but what if he gives it to a child and that child dies. Fox should be more concerned about people and less about their ratings and their uneducated SHOCK JOCKS.
